Marys in the Bible

The name Mary comes from the Hebrew name Miriam. It was a very common name among Jewish women, which is why several different women with the same name appear in the New Testament.

Below is a list of all the Marys in the Bible. Click each name for a brief description.

Miriam, sister of Moses
Mary, mother of Jesus
Mary Magdalene
Mary of Bethany
Mary, mother of James and Joses (Joseph)
Mary, wife of Clopas
Mary, mother of John Mark
Mary of Rome

At the crucifixion, there may have been four different women named Mary standing near the cross, which explains why the Gospel writers carefully identify them by family connections.

John 19:25 says these ladies were at the cross:
Mary, mother of Jesus
Mary, wife of Clopas
Mary Magdalene

Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40 also mention:
Mary, mother of James and Joses (Joseph)
