Field Notes: St. John Lateran

  • Officially the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. The title “archbasilica” indicates it is the highest-ranking church in the Catholic Church, ranking above all others, including St. Peter’s.
  • It is the Pope’s cathedral and the official seat of the Bishop of Rome.
  • Often called “the Mother of all churches”
  • The land originally belonged to the Laterani family. “Lateran” simply refers to the location. It’s a family name, not a saint’s name.
