When the Israelites reached the Red Sea, they were trapped. Pharoah’s army was right behind them, the Red Sea was in front of them, and they had nowhere to go.
God told Moses to stretch out his hand, and the waters of the Red Sea parted. The people crossed on dry ground with walls of water on either side.
When the Egyptian army followed, the waters merged and swallowed them, destroying the whole army.
The region includes shallow areas where strong winds can push back water, but no specific crossing site has been confirmed – making the timing an scale described in Exodus all the more striking. Exodus 14:21 says God used the wind to part the sea. Just sayin’.
