Field Notes: Hagar’s Well – Beer-lahai-roi

Genesis 16

Alone in the wilderness after fleeing from Sarai’s mistreatment, Hagar stops by a spring for a place to rest and regroup.

At the well, she is found by an Angel of the Lord who calls her by name. The angel tells her she is pregnant and will have a son called Ishmael and he will live in defiance of his brothers. The angel tells her that her descendants will be too many to count. This is part of the lineage to which Islam later traces back.

Hagar, in despair, is relieved at the sight of the Angel of the Lord. She feels seen. She responds to the angel by naming the place “Beer-lahai-roi”… the well of the Living One who sees me.
