Another “not really a mountain” situation. Mount Carmel is actually a limestone ridge that runs along the Mediterranean coast in northern Israel.
In the Bible, it is most famous as the place where the prophet Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal during the reign of King Ahab (1 Kings 18).
When the prophet of Baal failed to call down fire from heaven, Elijah prayed and the Lord sent fire that consumed the offering, the altar, and even the water in the trench around it. The people of Israel fell on their faces and declared, “The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:39).
The traditional site of Elijah’s confrontation is near the highest point of the ridge, called Muhraka today.
