Mount Moriah is the modern day Temple Mount. It’s as simple as that.
Underneath the raised platform of the Temple Mount is what the Bible calls Mount Moriah.
It’s All the Same Hill
- This is where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac (Genesis 22)
- This is where Solomon’s Temple stood (2 Chronicles 3:1)
- The Second Temple was later built on this same site
- The visible walls in this photo are Herod the Great’s retaining walls
Nerd Notes:
–The staircase visible along the southern wall of the Temple Mount is known as the Southern Steps, one of the main entrances used by Jewish pilgrims visiting the Temple in the time of Jesus.
–Because dozens of ritual purification baths (mikva’ot) have been found by archaeologists in this same area, many scholars believe the 3,000 baptisms at Pentecost in Acts 2 occurred in this area.
